Are Flip Flops a Flop?

Now that summer has arrived, we know what your go-to footwear choice will be: flip flops! Although this option is convenient and mostly comfortable, these are not the most supportive selection for your feet.

Unfortunately, flip flops do not offer any arch support because of how thin the sole of the shoe is. In addition to little protection, shock absorption, and no heel cushioning, your feet are put under an incredible amount of force. Injuries exasperated by these shoes include sprained ankles, strained tendons, plantar fasciitis, nerve pain, swelling, and often tendinitis.

We recommend only wearing flip-flops when absolutely necessary (beach, pool, spa, etc.) They can affect your body’s biomechanics because they don’t bend in the same way your feet do, therefore affecting your overall body posture and alignment.

When looking for proper footwear, look for these key factors:

  • Additional straps or full coverage
  • The correct amount of bend
  • Adequate support
  • The right size
