What Mattress Are You Sleeping On?

Ever wake up with body aches and pains even after a good nights rest? Do they dissipate after you get up and move around? Do you go to bed pain free, but wake up with these annoying symptoms? Well, it may be your body telling you, “It’s time to get a new mattress!!!”

We know that purchasing a new mattress can be a bit overwhelming, plus it’s quite the commitment (and possibly an investment). On average they say that the life span of a mattress can be anywhere from 7-10 years. Of course this depends on the mattress type, quality of materials used and time spent in bed. Due to the fact that there is an array of options out there, we thought we would give you some tips on purchasing your next mattress from a physical therapy perspective.

-Know what your body needs. If you suffer from neck or back pain, it is extremely important for your spine to maintain a neutral, supported position. Does this mean you should get a firm mattress? Not necessarily. Instead, we recommend a “hybrid” type. A hybrid is a combination of inner springs for support and memory foam for comfort. If you or your partner sleep hot, look for cooling mattress options that are breathable or gel infused and say good-bye to night sweats!

-Look for “comfort” trial periods and good return policies. Take advantage of companies offering a 30 day trial to see whether or not the mattress is for you. Along with that, make sure if you have to return it, the company will pick it back up from your home hassle free. This isn’t a must. but its nice to have the option and takes the stress out of the possibility of not liking your new mattress. You don’t have to be “stuck” with it out of inconvenience. It’s not worth it.

-The more expensive the mattress, the better. NOT! There are many affordable options out there that won’t break the bank. When heading to the mattress store used to be the default shopping method, nowadays online retailers are becoming more popular and only keep getting more competitive (aka lower prices for the consumer). Don’t forget to check their return policy when buying online!

-Read the reviews from real people. Thought that bed-in-a-box sounded ridiculous? Not when there are over thousands of 5 star reviews! Check them out and do some research.

When purchasing your next mattress, there are many options  out there, but it really comes down to personal preference. The most important things are your comfort and sleep quality so you can wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day!
