There’s Nothing Hip About Hip Pain!

Hip Pain

One of the most common complaints we have here in our clinic is hip pain! There are several causes of hip pain and each can be determined by the specific location the pain is felt. If it’s a impairment inside the hip joint, this will usually result in pain at the front of the hip or groin area. Pain on the outside of the hip and outer butt, is normally caused by problems with a dysfunction in pelvic and hip joint alignment due to an imbalance of surrounding muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissue structures.

Hip pain is caused by a variety of issues. Some of these include arthritis, bursitis, sciatica, bone cancer, osteoporosis, etc. Although most cases of hip pain at simply a result of repetitive stress or inflammation, it is important to get imaging (x-ray or MRI) to rule out more severe injuries. Please seek out a physician’s guidance if you experience sudden swelling, intense pain, inability to bear weight or move your leg/hip etc.

In addition to standard modalities, physical therapy is an amazing resource to help with the discomfort associated with hip pain. Physical therapy helps to improve overall function and mobility. Your initial evaluation will consist of a gait assessment where the therapist will observe how you walk and note any major discrepancies. Palpation helps to feel for abnormalities, as well as measuring range of motion while bending, rotating, and straightening. Adding weights for strength shows if there is a muscular weakness or imbalance.

Once this evaluation is completed, your therapist will develop a plan to get you on your way, pain free! If you would like to schedule a free screen, please call us at 619-437-6450 or send us an email at results@resultsrehab.com. We would love to help!
