Chiro, Massage, PT, Oh My!

Back pain? Neck pain? Knee pain? Any kind of physical pain? Now what? Should you get a massage? Go to the chiropractor? Or book an appointment with a physical therapist? We get these questions all the time. So what is the best option? While there are some similarities with the three practices, there are also distinct differences.

Chiropractic treatment is performed by a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.). Treatment focuses primarily on the alignment of the spine and specific joints (bony structures) through manipulation. Chiropractors use their hands or a chiropractic adjustment tool to apply controlled pressure to an affected area. Since the spine is the main focus of chiropractic treatment, examinations generally require X-rays or other lab tests to pinpoint problem areas.

 

A massage is performed by a licensed massage therapist (LMT) who applies direct pressure to soft tissue or muscle groups to relieve pain and promote healing. Unlike chiropractic treatment, massage treatment focuses solely on the stimulation of muscles and is not used to treat pain associated with the spine, joints or tendons. There are multiple benefits to massage therapy including relaxation, blood circulation, increased energy and mood enhancement.

 

Physical therapy treatment is performed by a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT).  They have in-depth knowledge of how the body works and specialize in hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat symptoms of illness, injury and disability. They are movement specialists with the goal of reduced pain and improved movement patterns. Physical therapy includes rehabilitation, as well as prevention of injury, and promotion of health and fitness.

 

So now that you have some background on the three pain relief options, how do you know which one is right for you? Listen to your body. What’s it telling you?

If your muscles are sore and you are looking for a way to unwind and relax – massage might be the best choice. If your pain is caused by poor posture, a strained ligament or different kind of an injury, a chiropractor or physical therapist can help solve the problem by re-aligning and analyzing your movement patterns. A good doctor will make sure you are set up in the long-run by showing you a series of exercises that you can do at home in order to prevent another injury and to strengthen your muscles, so be mindful of that!

Sometimes the best things come in pairs. These treatments can be highly beneficial on their own, but they go well together too!
