Plantar Fasciitis
Do you experience sharp heel pain with the first few steps you take in the morning? Is it painful to start walking after sitting for longer periods of time? You may be experiencing the symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue that originates at the heel bone and attaches at the toes. This common foot injury can sneak up on you for several reasons.
1) Increased activity (i.e. running, walking, dancing)
2) Poor shoe support or pathologic foot structure/mechanics
3) Increased weight gain
With increased activity and exercise, more stress is exerted on the fascia that supports your arch and can potentially create irritation and microtears. If not addressed immediately, the pain can worsen and lead to increased injury.
It is recommended to ramp up exercise and activity appropriately as to avoid excess stretch and strain to plantar fascia. Wearing supportive shoes or insoles can also be helpful in reducing risk of inflammation and pain.
