The Results PT Short Guide to Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is a common issue that can affect people of all ages. It is estimated that around 20% of adults in the United States experience shoulder pain at some point in their lives.

There are many different causes of shoulder pain. Some common causes include rotator cuff injuries, muscle strains and tears, bursitis, and tendonitis. In some cases, shoulder pain can also be caused by osteoarthritis or other underlying medical conditions.

Symptoms of shoulder pain can vary, but may include aching or stiffness in the shoulder, difficulty moving the arm, and weakness in the arm or hand. In some cases, shoulder pain may be accompanied by swelling, redness, or warmth in the affected area.

If you are experiencing shoulder pain, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. You can treat your shoulder pain in a variety of ways, including but not limited to:

  1. Rest: Resting the shoulder can help to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid activities that cause pain or strain on the shoulder, and try to keep the shoulder elevated when possible.

  2. Ice: Applying ice to the shoulder can help to reduce inflammation and numb the pain. Try wrapping an ice pack in a towel and applying it to the shoulder for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day.

  3. Heat: Applying heat to the shoulder can help to relax tense muscles and increase blood flow to the area. Try using a heating pad or warm compress on the shoulder for 20-30 minutes at a time.

  4. Over-the-counter pain medication: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen can help to reduce pain and inflammation. Always follow the instructions on the label and talk to your doctor before taking any new medications.

  5. Stretching and strengthening exercises: Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can help to improve flexibility and support the shoulder. Be sure to consult with a physical therapist or healthcare provider before starting any new exercise program.

If your injury requires more intensive care than can be provided at home, consider physical therapy, as it has proven to be effective at treating shoulder injuries and can help you recover more quickly and effectively.

Studies have shown that people who see a physical therapist for shoulder injuries recover much faster than those who try to let the injury heal on its own. In fact, one study found that people who received physical therapy for shoulder injuries recovered an average of 31% faster than those who did not.

At Results Physical Therapy, our physical therapists use the Results Treatment Method to rehabilitate shoulder injuries. This method is a comprehensive approach that combines manual therapy, exercise, and education to help patients recover from shoulder injuries and prevent future injuries.
