The Three Most Common Hip Injuries Explained

Hip and pelvis injuries are common among people of all ages and physical activity levels. These injuries can range from minor strains and sprains to severe fractures and dislocations, often resulting in significant pain and limited mobility. In The Three Most Common Hip Injuries Explained, we will explore how common hip injuries are and introduce stretches to allvieate pain.

Hip Fractures

Hip fractures are one of the most common injuries in the elderly population, with an estimated 300,000 hospitalizations annually in the United States alone. A hip fracture is a break in the upper part of the femur bone, near the hip joint. This injury is often caused by a fall or other trauma, and it is more prevalent in women than in men.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects the cartilage in the hip joint, causing pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. This condition affects over 32.5 million adults in the United States, with an estimated 25% of women and 15% of men over 60 years old experiencing symptoms. The cause of osteoarthritis is still unclear, but it is believed to be related to age, genetics, and lifestyle factors such as obesity and lack of exercise.

Strains and Sprains

Strains and sprains in the hip and pelvis area are common among athletes and people who participate in physical activities such as running, dancing, and gymnastics. These injuries occur when a muscle or ligament in the hip or pelvis is stretched or torn, causing pain and inflammation. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, strains and sprains account for approximately 45% of all sports injuries.

Yoga and Hip Pain Relief

While there are various treatment options available for hip and pelvis injuries, one effective way to relieve hip pain is through yoga. Yoga poses such as the Pigeon Pose, Butterfly Pose, and Hip Opener Pose can help to stretch and strengthen the muscles in the hip and pelvis area, reducing pain and improving mobility. Additionally, practicing yoga can also help to improve overall flexibility and reduce stress, making it an excellent complementary treatment for people with hip and pelvis injuries.
