What is the Core and why is it so important?

When most people think of the core, they think of their abs. And when people think of strengthening their abs they automatically think of crunches or sit-ups. Unfortunately, that is an outdated exercise model and has been found to be inefficient. The core actually consists of the not only the abdominals but the gluteal muscles, the back muscles next to the spine, the diaphragm (Mainly involved with breathing) and pelvic floor muscles. Your core is your entire support system that allows you to perform everyday activities and movements. It literally keeps your body upright by supporting your spine and pelvis to provide a strong foundation for your upper and lower limbs.

Although we want to sculpt the perfect six-pack, that is not enough to improve one’s core strength and ultimately improve their physical health. It has been shown that inactivity can lead to weakened core muscles which in turn results in poor health and increased risk of high blood pressure and progression of chronic diseases. In the 2014 Participation Report conducted by the Physical Activity Council, it was reported that 28% of Americans or 80.2 million people, aged six and older are physically inactive. This is an alarming statistic considering that a decline in physical activity can lead to poor general physical health.

Another reason it is important to strengthen your core is to prevent injury. Lower back injury or injury to other parts of the body can be linked to a weak core. When you have difficulty activating your core muscles for stability, it is common that other parts of your body (I.e., shoulders, hips, and knees) will compensate and potentially result in an over-use injury. It has been shown that core strength training can help to alleviate lower back pain.
