The Pelvis is the foundation for the spine and torso making it a very important structure in the body. The pelvis meets the thigh bone (femur) to form the hip joint. This ball and socket joint provides mobility for walking, going up and down stairs, and squatting. It is common that over time the cartilage layer that covers the hip joint deteriorates causing osteoarthritis. Many people, both active and sedentary, can present with hip pain that seems to have begun with no major incident. The causes of insidious hip or pelvis pain include having weak lower leg muscles, poor alignment of the ilium, tight leg muscles, and poor coordination or motor control. These impairments are common when people live a sedentary lifestyle and/or work at a desk for long hours.
It is very important to maintain the alignment of your pelvis and the mobility of your hip joint in order to perform functional tasks and recreational activities. At our clinic, we assess your positioning and alignment before we start treating the symptoms in order to be more specific. It is common for the pelvis to be positioned slightly forward or backward depending on how you sleep, sit, or move during the day.
